I really like Sarah Isgur's take on this. The social media companies set up the equivalent of a Walmart store and told everyone "we've created a public forum just for you. We even built you your own soapbox to stand on and say whatever you want." Now they're coming back and saying "Actually, this is a Walmart and, just like Walmart, we can kick you out." The second statement is actually correct. Their problem is that they held themselves out to be something that they never were. They were always a private forum and users were only ever free to use that forum at the pleasure of the owner (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Now that the mask is off, and it's clear to everyone that social media is a private forum, will it still be as popular? We shall see...
